Language Arts Skills
In grade 2, language arts focuses on four main areas: vocabulary, listening, reading, and writing. We want to help students grow their vocabulary and understanding of grammar so that they can improve their spoken and written English abilities.
#1- Vocabulary:
The key to learning a new language is to have a large vocabulary. The more words that the students know, the easier it is for them to read and write in English. Each week, students will learn ten new words. The grade 2 Language Arts program focuses on words that students will see and hear often. Each week will have a different sound focus, like "sh" or "o," or a different grammar focus, like past tense verbs. We will provide the students with a lot of listening, writing, and reading practice so that they can better remember their key words.
#2- Listening:
Students will have many opportunities to improve their English listening skills during the year. Of course, every English class is good practice for listening, but we like to include fun activities for the kids to get excited about, too. One of these activities is a "read aloud. This is where students can listen to the teacher read a book, and then answer some questions.
#3- Reading:
Students will also get more listening practice during their reading time. Every week, students will be in small "Oxford Reading" groups. These books are by level, and give the students the chance to read aloud with their friends and answer questions that show that they understood the book. Every Oxford Reading lesson also has practice with our key grammar point in grade 2: past tense verbs.
#4- Writing:
We do a lot of writing practice in grade 2. We will do weekly writing journals, practice writing our spelling words, and we will also do fun writing activities in class like poems and stories.
